Approach/Discussion:
AP and lateral plain films of the airway are the preferred imaging
modality.
The AP film in croup will reveal the characteristic steeple sign, due to subglottic edema.
The lateral film in epiglottitis will reveal the characteristically thickened epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds. Subglottic edema may also be present.
