Renal Fracture

Clinical Presentation:
Symptoms are abdominal pain, hematuria, and flank tenderness.

Etiology/Pathophysiology:
Blunt abdominal trauma. Twenty percent of all renal trauma has concurrent tumor, anomalies of renal position and fusion, or congenital obstruction. Forty percent of patients with renal injury have other organ injuries.

Pathology:
Not applicable

Imaging Findings:
Different classifications of damage to the kidney: (1) minor - contusion or a contained laceration, (2) major - capsular tear with extension into the pelvicalyceal system, (3) critical - renal fragmentation or vascular avulsion or thrombosis.
