Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed
Approach/Discussion:
Patients on ECMO are systemically heparinized, and therefore at high
risk for intracranial hemorrhage. In preterm infants, such as infants
on ECMO for diaphragmatic hernia, you must check for interventricular
and intraparenchymal hemorrhage. In term infants, such as infants on
ECMO for meconium aspiration, you must check for intraparenchymal
hemorrhage.
